Through The Looking-Glass
Alice through the Looking Glass, Darkly
Church bells chimed from afar. Alice counted them; one, two, three. It was almost time to make her entrance. Hidden behind the doorway, she watched as the guests arrived. Their elaborate dress mirrored her own. Mimicking French pastries was the current fashion. Alice was trapped inside a blue frosting gown with candy bows and ribbons of pink attached throughout the sickly sweet pattern. The white lace fringe was piped along her sleeves, neckline and anywhere else spare fabric could have been sewn. It was the day of her nineteenth birthday, but she had no smiles to spare.
Suddenly, the bells stopped. The maid’s voice called out to her. Alice grasped her side where the whale bone corset dug into her ribs. As she tried to draw breaths, the lacing pulled tighter. She had to escape. Alice ran to the farthest place she could think of. She rushed through the parlor and to the back staircase towards the attic door. As much as she begged, it w

Silent Lover
I stand by the bed. I watch him there, mumbling by the window sill. He does it so often. I find no reason to bring him back, to lay him down, and have him rest as he should. He’ll find peace when he needs to. Visions of bloody soldiers parade through his dreams. Now is the time of serenity. I care not what others may have said.
“Come to the window,” he calls, “sweet is the night-air!” His eyes glow glassy in the moonlight. I try to match his smile. “Listen.” He holds one finger to his lips. They whisper something I cannot hear.
Nearby, water flows. It is a trigger for the rushing sea of his imagination. Beside the bed there lay his most important articles. I dust the crumbling leather book of his grandfather, adjust the pictures, and polish the medal of valor until it I can see one lonely blue eye in its reflection. That eye has more lines than the year before. It has seen more worries. It has cried more tears.
He turns from the window. His hands fall

Blank paper. How to fill it? There are many things I could say about my life. My alarm clock turned to 2:14 a.m. The assignment was easy. My approach wasn’t. Every student had to take four years of Human Sexuality before graduation. It was like English or Math. You knew you had to have it.
The titled received giggles from the first years. I knew there was more to it than the physical act of sex. We learned about emotional relationships. Why were people the way they were? We lived in a world of Positive or Negative, Gay or Straight. In my second year we learned about a new group, Bisexuals.
They should have been called Neutrals, peace keepers. No. They were the ones who started fires with both groups without meaning to. The Positives saw them as wanting to be a part of the Negative world, the world which rejected any form of homosexuality. The Negatives saw them as being tainted by the Positive lifestyle. The Negatives who ran t

I was born to a woman who never loved me. She didn’t bother to give me a name when she was filling out the paper work at the children’s bank. I was marked as Baby 214. When they adopted me, my parents were told little about her. She kept clean during the pregnancy and drank very little. What mattered most to them was that she waved the one-year retrieval rights, which came at an additional fee. If they could fork over the two hundred dollars, I would be theirs (as-is). The contract was unconditional. She could never come back to claim me, not that she ever tried.
When I was older, I looked through my records and found out the woman had been a gambling addict. Her reason for transferal was checked as “to acquire additional funds.” Funds for what? I didn’t know. It basically said my mom sold me for fifty bucks and a bus ticket. I’m glad to know I was worth only so much to her. My parents would never allow me to feel li

Sure, I'll glad to be of service. Hmm... well, first off, you've already seen that *DailyLitDeviations is a great way to meet new writers and see good work.

Other than that, *ProsePlease or =PoetryPlease (depending on your main focus) would be a good thing to look at. Both clubs are very active.

If you like to 'chat' I would suggest looking up Lit chatrooms here on dA, such as #LITplease or #FreeWriters. (You can find the chat area by going to [link] and choosing a chatroom from there.)

There really isn't a whole ton of stuff out there for writers, so a lot of us know each other. And may I say again, welcome! dA's really a great time. :)
